Cleaning Up the Messy Desktop

Our computer desktops are often used to dump all kinds of shortcuts, pictures, downloads, notes, installers, and documents. So, if there is no permanent home for these bits and pieces, the desktop is the most accessible place even though they act as obvious distractions on the windows machine.

The mass of icons does not help in a smooth computing experience, so putting your computer's front page into shape is considered a significant step towards improving the performance of the computer. Some easy tricks and tips make the desktop look cleaner and professional.

Create Folders on Desktops

The desktop also acts as one of the storage locations, which means one can also have folders and subfolders. So, when one is dropping an item on the desktop, then can easily be put into folders with different categories. By clubbing similar files, including shortcuts into folders, one can see fewer icons on the desktop.

One can also be more organized when working on temporary files by creating a temporary folder and keeping all files or images that one wants to attach to emails. It will reduce the clutter on the desktop. Once the work gets completed, the temporary files can be deleted. It is much faster, and one will not have to worry about accidentally deleting important files.

Installation of third-party apps

There is an option to enlist third-party services. They work on specific operating systems like Windows or macOS. These apps allow one to group files and shortcuts into buckets like one arranges shortcuts on the phone. They then show or hide buckets as needed resulting in a cleaner desktop.

Other free apps split the desktop into custom containers. These containers point to the subfolders in the system, such as documents folders or any other type of folder one has created. It makes it easier to shift shortcuts and files of the desktop into these containers and keep within easy reach.

Download settings adjustments

No one wants to clean the desktop frequently and then see the icons clutter back when one finishes. To avoid these repeated non-productive activities, one can save fewer files on the desktop in the first place.

It does not require a third-party app to do it. When downloading a file or transferring an image to another location, it is important to decide upfront whether these items need to be saved on the desktop or not. One needs seconds to find the specific folder in the system where the downloads or temporary files can be dumped. There is another way of tweaking the browser's settings that will enable one to ensure where the files will land up when they are downloaded.

Final thoughts

Even with these desktop hygiene practices, one will still need to run weekly or monthly desktop cleanup in windows 10. Hence, setting aside some time will be useful. It will help get on through deleting and organizing more than expected and keeping the desktop neat and clean all the time.
